A New Professional Development Opportunity For Speech and Language Therapists
LATEST NEWS: Places still available for the Postgraduate Certificate - see Overview page for details
As part of a European Intiative to enhance opportunities for continued professional development for Speech and Language Therapists / Logopedists, a postgraduate certificate in motor speech disorders (MSD) will be offered from September 2010 (subject to approval by the award giving institutions). The development of this course is one of only two initiatives that have been funded by the EU in the field of speech and language therapy to date.
The PG Cert is the result of collaboration between 8 different institutions in Europe, and brings together prominent researchers and teachers in the field of motor speech disorders to provide a high quality specialisation course for qualified clinicians. The content emphasises the multi-disciplinary nature of the disorders and teaching will be provided by speech and language therapists, clinical linguists as well as neurologists.
The certificate aims to promote evidence based practice by exploring the management of MSD in-depth in relation to relevant theory, clinical application and up to date research findings. The programme will provide specialist knowledge that enables clinicians to enhance their professional skills and may contribute to career development subject to recognition by the relevant professional body.
In addition to the preparation of a postgraduate specialisation course, the EU funding also extended to development of a curriculum for MSD at pre-qualifying level, together with suggested reading. This resource is intended as guidance for academics teaching the topic, as well as for professionals as a self-study guide and has been reviewed by internationally renowned experts in MSD.
